Alex is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department at MIT. He is part of the inaugural PhD cohort in Music Technology and Computation, where his research is conducted jointly with the Music and Theater Arts (MTA) section. He currently performs research with soundfield reconstruction, spatial audio rendering, musical harmonic estimation, and acoustic instrument simulation.
Previously, Alex was a Senior Engineer in Qualcomm’s Multimedia R&D group, where he has developed technologies for spatial audio, electroacoustic systems, and multiphysics simulation; his work has been commercialized in products and published in patents, international standards, and conferences. He graduated with a B.S. and M.S. at UC San Diego, where he had worked as a graduate researcher with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) and SpatLab, where he researched sparse Bayesian estimation techniques for spatial audio.
In his spare time, Alex enjoys playing guitar, holding listening parties, specialty coffee, and sport climbing.
